My bill to eliminate various sales tax exemptions was passed out of sub-committee this week. As amended, it would eliminate eighteen exemptions and re-establish the Joint Committee on Taxation to review all existing exemptions every 5 years.
As a reminder, my orignial bill from last year eliminated two-thirds of the exemptions and cut the overall sales tax rate. By the time it was passed by the House, most exemptions were added back in. The bill was not taken up by the Senate and the Session ended.
I introduced the amended version this year with the hope that it would pass the House as it did last year. The Senate would have an opportunity to either affirm the slight changes made to our sales tax code or amend the bill to drastically eliminate exemptions as was originally intended.
